Do You Know Your SCCA Solo Rules?

A Solo Event is a non-speed driving skill contest. Section 1.1.4, National Solo Rules
Solo events are sporting events, to be conducted in a sporting spirit; that all event are organized and managed by amateurs who cheerfully give their time and do their best, that the competitor may expect some imperfections or the organizers and of his fellow competitors; and that, to a reasonable extent, these things are part of the chances he takes in entering the competition. Section 1.1.4 National Solo Rules
A passenger is allowed [in a solo event] provided he/she is no younger than twelve (12) years old; is in a vehicle which has passed tech inspection; is wearing a properly fitted seat belt and a properly fitted helmet; he/she (or a parent/guardian, as appropriate) has completed and signed the required participation waiver(s). Section 1.3.2(D) National Safety Rules
Children under twelve (12) years of age and pets shall be prohibited from the staging, grid, start-finish and course areas. Section 1.3.2(N) National Solo Rules
Course workers must be standing at all times when any competition cars are on-course during the event. Section 1.3.2(R) National Solo Rules
Minimum viewing distances may not be less than 75 feet from the course edge in unprotected areas (areas without adequate barrier protection such as concrete or tire walls. 2.2(M) National Solo Rules
No excessive fuel, oil, water or brake fluid leaks should be observed while the engine is running. 3.3.3(B)(9) National Solo Rules
Adequate mufflers are required for Solo events. The criterion of adequacy is the sound level. Any car deemed by the Event Chairman to be excessively loud, shall not compete without acceptable modifications installed on the car. 3.5 National Solo Rules
All vehicles must display numbers and class numbers on both sides. All letters and numbers must be on body panels and not on windows. Numbers must be a minimum of 8" high and class letters must be a minimum of 4" high. 3.7(A), (D), and (E) National Solo Rules
Helmets: All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding Snell foundation standards (SA, K, or M) are acceptable. 4.3.1 National Solo Rules
The driver is responsible for the correct determination of the car's class/category. 4.6 National Solo Rules
No person may compete who has pre-run through all or part of the course in or on any wheeled vehicle, except disabled drivers may use a wheelchair or similar aid--but no bicycles. 4.10 National Rules
A map of the course will be posted prior to the start of the event. 6.2 National Solo Rules
A car will commence its run at least 15 feet before the point at which timing begins. 6.5 National Solo Rules
Event shall be timed to the nearest 1000th of a second. 7.1.1 National Solo Rules
A minimum of five minutes must have elapsed before a competitor may take a rerun. 7.4 National Solo Rules
A scoreboard must list the driver's name, car number, class, corrected times and penalties. 7.8 National Solo Rules
Course Safety and Layout Rules 2.1 and 2.2 National Solo Rules
· Gates at least 15’ wide.
· Slaloms at least 45’ between cones.
· Minimum 25’ from course boundary to solid objects.
· Unless substantial barriers, non-participant areas should be roped off.
· Gate exits should direct car to next gate.
· Speeds on straight stretches should not normally exceed the low 60's (mph) for the fastest Stock and Street Prepared cars.
· Turns should not normally allow speeds in excess of 45 mph in unprepared cars.
· Avoid course layout that could cause car to become airborne.
· On kart courses, no solid barriers (other than curbs) within 50’.
· Avoid negative cambered turns.
· Straights longer than 150’ should not end in sharp turn.
· Solid objects should not mark course boundaries.
· Cars running on course at same time should not run near each other.
· All portions of course should be visible to at least one course marshal, who can communicate with the starter.
· Use extreme care placing start, finish, staging, and timing areas.
· The last turn should be as tight as possible and finishing straight tightly defined.
· Sufficient distance after finish line for stopping.
· Entrance and exit lanes shall be at separate points of course.
· Children under 12 and pets not allowed in staging, grid, start/finish and course areas.
· Have fire extinguishers, flags and quickdry at corner stations.
· Video or still cameras not permitted in course area except as approved by SSS and a spotter to warn of approaching vehicles with photographer.
